Sedation Dentistry for Children
Dental anxiety is common in children. Sedation dentistry allows Dr. Boyd to provide safe, effective care while keeping your child relaxed and comfortable throughout the entire visit.
A Calm, Supportive Approach First
Sedation is not the first tool we reach for. Our team is trained in child-centered communication and behavior guidance techniques that help the majority of children feel comfortable without any sedation at all.
For children who still experience significant anxiety, or for procedures that require it, sedation provides a safe and well-established way to complete needed treatment without trauma or fear.
Dr. Boyd discusses sedation only when it is genuinely in your child's best interest — and always explains the options, risks, and benefits clearly before any decision is made.
Important note for parents
Every child is different. The information on this page is general guidance only. Whether sedation is appropriate for your child depends on their age, health history, anxiety level, and the specific treatment required.
Please call our office to discuss your child's specific situation before making any decisions.
Call (254) 771-2515Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
The most commonly used sedation option in pediatric dentistry. Safe, well-studied, and fast-acting.
How it is given
A small, comfortable mask is placed over your child's nose. They breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen throughout the procedure. No needles or medication is swallowed.
What your child feels
Most children feel relaxed, slightly light-headed, and calm. Some feel a mild tingling sensation. They remain awake and can communicate with Dr. Boyd throughout the visit.
After the appointment
The effects wear off within minutes once the mask is removed. Pure oxygen is given at the end of every appointment. Children can typically resume normal activities the same day.
When Sedation May Be Recommended
Dr. Boyd evaluates each child individually. These are common situations where sedation may be discussed.
Significant dental anxiety
Children who become very fearful or upset before or during dental visits may benefit from sedation, which helps them relax and have a more positive experience.
Very young children
Toddlers and young children who cannot fully cooperate with treatment due to age and development may need sedation to receive safe, effective care.
Lengthy or complex procedures
When multiple teeth need treatment or a procedure requires extended time, sedation helps children remain comfortable and still throughout the appointment.
Strong gag reflex
Some children have a sensitive gag reflex that makes dental work uncomfortable or difficult. Sedation can significantly reduce this response.
Special health care needs
Children with certain physical, cognitive, or behavioral conditions may require sedation to receive dental care safely and comfortably.
Safety Is Always the Priority
Before any sedation appointment, Dr. Boyd reviews your child's complete medical history, current medications, and health status. Parents receive detailed pre-appointment and post-appointment instructions to follow carefully.
Our office follows the sedation guidelines established by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Your child is monitored throughout every procedure. If you have any concerns about sedation, please call us — we are happy to answer your questions before you commit to anything.
Sedation Questions from Parents
These are the questions we hear most often. If yours is not here, call us.
Is sedation dentistry safe for children?
Yes, when performed by a trained pediatric dentist following established clinical guidelines. Dr. Boyd is trained in pediatric sedation protocols and carefully evaluates every child's health history before recommending any sedation. Your child's safety is the first consideration in every decision.
What is nitrous oxide and how does it work?
Nitrous oxide (sometimes called laughing gas) is a colorless, odorless gas mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask placed over the nose. It helps children feel relaxed and comfortable within a few minutes. It does not put children to sleep. The effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed, and children are typically able to return to normal activities the same day.
Will I be able to stay with my child?
In most cases, yes. We encourage parents to be present and involved. Dr. Boyd will discuss what is most appropriate based on your child's age, temperament, and the type of procedure being performed.
How do I prepare my child for a sedation appointment?
Dr. Boyd will give you specific preparation instructions based on the type of sedation used. For nitrous oxide, no special preparation is typically required. For deeper sedation, food and drink restrictions will be provided in advance. Follow the pre-appointment instructions exactly.
What should I expect after the appointment?
With nitrous oxide, children recover almost immediately and most can resume normal activities within the hour. Dr. Boyd will provide detailed aftercare instructions for any sedation procedure, including what to watch for and when to call the office.
How do I know if sedation is the right choice for my child?
The best way to find out is to call us and talk it through. Dr. Boyd will discuss your child's medical history, anxiety level, and treatment needs to determine whether sedation is appropriate and, if so, which option is the safest fit.
